Hyperion
and The
Fall of Hyperion, by Dan Simmons, are an epic science fiction drama/adventure.
A sort of futuristic Canterbury Tales, Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion
follow the adventures of a priest, soldier, poet, scholar, starship
captain, detective, and diplomatic consul as they travel to the world
of Hyperion. Inside a grand plot, you will find influences from Chaucer,
Shakespeare, Ezra Pound’s Cantos, and John Keats, from whose epic
poems come the name for these two books. To see more of Matt’s
thoughts on Hyperion, see his article published in the Winter
2002 issue of The First Line.
Sean Russell’s The
Initiate Brother was the beginning inspiration to Matt’s first
novel The Calling. A beautifully written book, The Initiate Brother
takes place in a mythical Far East. Epic battles, vast landscapes, beautiful
poetry, forbidden love – all can be found in the pages of Russell’s
fantasy epic.
The opening line: “If I could tell you only one thing about
my life it would be this: when I was seven years old the mailman ran
over my head. As formative events go, nothing else comes close.”
Half-Apache, mostly-orphaned, Edgar Mint begins his journey that has
readers laughing, crying, sympathizing, and ultimately, relating. As
Mirror chimes in for an endorsement: “If this was a film it would
be made by the Coen brothers. Quirky, charming and very funny.”
Matt began reading King here. It opened his eyes to perhaps today’s
greatest American storyteller. This is King’s take on the “America
losing its innocence” theme common from stories set in the 1960s.
King does it in a way no one ever has. Danger, suspense, great writing
– everything you come for in a King book.
